Make your nightstand the showpiece of your bedroom! Do you have a hard time trying to fit everything you need on your nightstand? In 15 minutes or less, you can declutter your space for a better night’s sleep. That little table next to your bed is one of the most hard-working pieces of furniture in your home! Unlike most things in this life, your night stand is always by your side when you need it to be! Unfortunately, we tend to abuse this little table. We pack it so full of “stuff” that it can make a whole room look disheveled. Not good.
So, what can we do to make this little workhorse stylish as well as functional? I am so glad you asked! Now my bedside tables are small RAST dressers from IKEA. I needed the extra storage and these fit the bill not to mention they only cost $39.99 each! I plan on switching out the hardware and painting them a deep, rich color to add a touch of drama. Maybe a darker blue taken from the crane watercolor art pieces that hang above the bed…someday.
First of all, decide what is absolutely essential to have next to you while in bed. Here is a list of some necessary items that might be on your list:
- Lighting
- Tissues
- Remote control(s)
- Cell phone/tablet
- Books
- Water bottle
- Medications
Does your list look similar? How could you clear off some of these things to help decrease some of the clutter? You could showcase some of your items by putting them on a sweet little tray or in a cute basket on the floor.
One of the best things I did was to take the lamps off of my night stands. I found a pair of really pretty wall lamps and hung them above both of my night stands. Unfortunately, these are no longer available, but here is a similar option. Once you have cleared off those lamps, you now have prime real-estate to add in style and function. Yay!
I have a wooden headboard attached my bed. On the side of my headboard, I attached a command hook and hung a cute little cloth basket that I bought from Thirty-One™. It is the perfect size for a cube box of tissues!
Now for those pesky remote controls. I like to keep those hidden because honestly, I have never seen a good-looking remote. I hardly ever watch television when I am in bed (only when I am sick or the neighbors are too loud). ☹ A pretty covered box works great for this and frankly, it makes me happy. 😊
I am one of the very few people left who does not take their cell phone into the bedroom with them. I find that taking a rest from texting at least one hour before bed, helps me to sleep better. I do, however use my tablet for reading. So, I guess I am not really doing myself any favors by looking at a screen that close to turning for the night. For my tablet (and my books and magazines), I bought this great bedside storage caddy that tucks around my side rails. It has so much room inside that I can put my favorite magazines and a pen and paper to jot down notes when I have ideas that I do not want to forget (I’m still not completely digital yet). 😊 If you are unable to use a bedside caddy, a really pretty lidded basket next to the bed can be a good storage option also.
Due to allergies and an occasional asthma attack, I have become a mouth-breather. So, I was pretty happy when I found this bedside water carafe. It has a little drinking glass inverted on the top and it is so pretty! Just perfect for that 1:00am thirst!
Speaking of allergies and asthma, I sometimes need to use an antihistamine or my inhaler in the middle of the night. Since my nightstand is actually a dresser, I can store these rescue meds in the top drawer. If that is not an option for you, put your meds in a fancy dish and place it on a pretty tray next to your water glass. Yay! Whatever you do to make this little bedside table your workhorse, know that you can also make your nightstand the showpiece of your bedroom.
