Bedroom Fixes for Little $$$

When you walk into your bedroom, does it make you feel calm and ready to relax? If you answered “yes,” then you are one of the lucky few.

This article is for the rest of us who could use a little help when it comes to creating an environment conducive to unwinding and slowing down a bit. After all, we do spend at least a third of our lives in this room!

Declutter

One of the best and cost-free things you can do to create a relaxing bedroom is to declutter. Pick up clothes off the floor and on your furniture and hang them up. Put dirty clothes in the hamper, laundry basket or whatever you use to take your laundry to the washing machine. Put away your jewelry, make up and other personal belongings laying around the room. I can still hear my mother saying these things to me. Ha!

Make your bed

This is a step in the right direction when trying to create a spa-like atmosphere in your bedroom and it is free!!! Make sure to pull your sheets tight and tuck them in on the sides. There is nothing better than sleeping on straightened sheets. They almost feel as if they were ironed. Aaahhhh!

Walls / Furniture

Now that you have straightened the room and made your bed, take a look around. Maybe now is the time to paint those walls! A $30 gallon of paint makes a huge impact on how a room feels.

Is your bedroom furniture in good shape or are you sleeping on a mattress on the floor? Facebook Marketplace is one of the best places to get used furniture for cheap! I have seen bed frames for $10 and dressers for as little as $25!

If what you have is still in pretty good shape, you might want to think about painting the pieces or just changing out the hardware. It’s amazing how big of an impact this is for so little money!

Window Treatments

Next, how are your window treatments? Do they function properly? If not, you can sometimes score really great deals on these at Big Lots™ or the dollar store.

I like to use drop cloths or pretty tablecloths and curtain clips to make no-sew curtains.

Pinterest has many options to look at when it comes to window treatments, but be careful! Sometimes looking at Pinterest sucks up 3 hours of your time and you don’t even remember what it was you were looking for! Ha! Although Pinterest time is never wasted time. You just come out with more projects you want to do! 😉

Storage Space

Does your space have enough storage? You might think about using pretty under the bed storage baskets. Walmart has some on wheels! Game changer! Basket storage in the closet works great also. I put baskets on the shelf above my closet hanger bar. It looks great and no one needs to know that I have 45 Christmas t-shirts!

Your Closet

Do you really wear all those clothes or are you keeping them for when you lose weight and they fit again? I am raising my hand on that last one right now! Donating your beautiful things really helps out those who need them. I know many who shop thrift stores for their personal wardrobes. Think how satisfying it will be to be able to close that closet door again! Speaking of closets, is yours busting at the seams?

Wall Décor

Use inexpensive frames in various sizes to make a gallery wall of your favorite things. Again, thrift stores are a great place to find frames. Maybe you’ll see your old clothes there! Ha! Frame family pics or tear out pages in a magazine! There are no rules for this. Yay!

Lighting and Mirrors

The last two ideas I have to share are

1. Lighting

Lighting is essential if you want to read in bed or try on clothes or jewelry. Make sure that you have task lighting by the bed and maybe overall lighting on the ceiling. You can “pretty” your lighting up by using fancy lampshades or shades you have decorated yourself (Pinterest again woohoo)! And lastly…

 2. Mirrors

Mirrors help to add light by reflecting it around the room. They come in all shapes and sizes, but my favorite is the one I have in my bedroom. It is a monster! So great when trying on clothes and seeing if you have the right shoes or not! 😉

My curtains are in the wash right now as you can tell in this pic. Oops!

Well there you have it! Even if you only do one of these ideas, it’s a step in the right direction.

Until then, I would love to hear from you! I am excited to read your ideas on furnishing a beautiful home for the life you desire. I look forward to this journey with you! It has been a long time coming!

Hi, I’m Danielle!

I am the designer, writer and diy’er behind this blog. I enjoy decorating my home for practically nothing by doing most of the work myself, finding new and imaginative ways to make it beautiful and by watching for killer sales. I find humor almost anywhere and can laugh at myself through it all. I have learned that most projects don’t go exactly as intended, but can be more beautiful than the original plan.
