holiday trends

what’s in and what’s out

As the holiday season approaches, homes everywhere begin to transform into festive wonderlands.

Each year brings new holiday trends that capture our imagination, while some traditions stick around, proving their timeless charm.

Let’s explore what’s buzzing in my home this season and what’s taking a backseat.

what’s in: embracing sustainability

One of the most significant holiday trends in my home this year is a focus on sustainability.

More families are opting for eco-friendly decorations, such as ornaments made from recycled materials and living Christmas trees that can be planted after the holidays.

This shift not only reduces waste but also adds a unique touch to holiday decor.

We’ve even started a tradition of making our decorations using natural elements like pinecones and dried fruits.

This adds a personal touch to our festivities.

what’s out: over-the-top displays

While extravagant light displays and inflatable yard decorations were once the norm, there’s a noticeable shift away from the “more is more” mentality.

Many are opting for simpler, more elegant decorations that emphasize quality over quantity.

Some have embraced a minimalist approach, focusing on warm lighting and a few carefully chosen pieces.

They opt to highlight their holiday spirit without overwhelming the senses.

what’s in: experiences over gifts

This year, the trend of prioritizing experiences over material gifts has gained significant traction.

Instead of piling up presents under the tree, families are focusing on creating memories together.

Whether it’s a holiday movie marathon, baking cookies, or planning a winter getaway, families are spending more time together..

This shift not only brings us closer but also alleviates the stress that often comes with gift shopping.

what’s out: impersonal gift-giving

In line with the trend toward experiences, impersonal gift-giving is on its way out.

Instead of generic gifts, there’s a growing emphasis on thoughtful, personalized presents that reflect the recipient’s interests and passions.

Some have embraced a new tradition of “Secret Santa” with a twist: each gift must be handmade or sourced from local artisans.

This ensures that gifts are meaningful aa well as unique.

what’s in: tech-savvy celebrations

Technology continues to play a significant role in how we celebrate the holidays.

From virtual gatherings to online shopping and smart home devices that help set the mood, tech is making holiday planning easier and more enjoyable.

We’ve integrated smart lights that change colors with the seasons, allowing us to create the perfect ambiance for our gatherings.

what’s out: traditional greeting cards

Although I do not agree, research says while sending holiday cards has been a long-standing tradition, many are opting for digital alternatives this year.

E-cards and personalized video messages are becoming the go-to options for keeping in touch with friends and family.

Although I might be old-school, I still enjoy the charm of sending and receiving a handwritten card in the mail.

Digital greetings save time and allow for more creativity.

As we navigate the evolving landscape of holiday traditions, it’s clear that our values and priorities are shifting.

Embracing sustainability, focusing on experiences, and incorporating technology are just a few of the holiday trends making waves in my home this year.

While some traditions may fade away, the spirit of togetherness and celebration remains at the heart of it all.

So, as you prepare for the upcoming holidays, consider what trends resonate with you and how you can make this season memorable in your unique way.

Hi, I’m Danielle!

I am the designer, writer and diy’er behind this blog. I enjoy decorating my home for practically nothing by doing most of the work myself, finding new and imaginative ways to make it beautiful and by watching for killer sales. I find humor almost anywhere and can laugh at myself through it all. I have learned that most projects don’t go exactly as intended, but can be more beautiful than the original plan.
