Every Christmas my husband John and I host a hot chocolate and Christmas movie party for our friends from our weekly Bible study.
We love doing this and it has become somewhat of a new tradition for all of us!
This year we all watched the 1947 version of Miracle on 34th Street. Yay!
You can watch it on Amazon Prime here!
Everyone brought an array of snacks (which I forgot to photograph)🙄 and John and I provided the hot chocolate bar with my homemade marshmallows! Yum!
I have been asked why I make my marshmallows instead of buying them.
Well, if you ever tasted the homemade ones, you would never go back to the others.
They also make amazing s’mores!
Our hot chocolate and Christmas movie party would not be complete without the hot chocolate!
It was so GOOD, y’all! I am putting the recipes for both the marshmallows and hot chocolate below.
We moved the sofa from the living room to the family room to make our theater seating.
We had to move the sofa table to the side to make room. Just enough seats for our group. Yay!
Hot Chocolate Recipe
- 10 cups whole milk
- 1 can Sweetened Condensed milk
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 12 oz Ghirardelli melting chocolate discs
Slowly warm the 2 milks heavy cream and vanilla in a saucepan. Be careful not to scorch or let the milk come to a boil. Add the chocolate and let it melt slowly in the milk mixture. Stir the mixture to combine. Once the chocolate is completely melted, pour the mixture into a crockpot on the “warm” setting. Ladle into mugs to enjoy!
Note: If the hot chocolate mixture is too rich, add more whole milk to dilute.
These are my favorite Christmas/Winter mugs!
I bought them after Christmas one year when Pier1 was still open brick and mortar.
The picture is slightly out of focus. Lol. Must be too many marshmallows!
Speaking of marshmallows, this recipe has been with me most of my adult life. It is SO good and semi-easy to make.
Homemade Marshmallows
- 3 packages unflavored gelatin
- 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
- 1 cup light corn syrup
- 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
- 1 tablespoon pure vanilla extract
- confectioner’s sugar for dusting
Combine the gelatin and 1/2 cup cold water in the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the whisk attachment and allow to sit while you make the syrup.
Meanwhile, combine the sugar, corn syrup and salt plus 1/2 cup water in a small saucepan and cook over medium heat until the sugar dissolves. Raise the heat to high and cook until the syrup reaches 240 degrees on a candy thermometer. Remove from heat.
With the mixer on low speed, slowly pour the syrup mixture into the dissolved gelatin. Put the mixer on high speed and whip until the mixture is very thick, about 15 minutes. Add the vanilla and mix thoroughly.
With a sieve, generously dust the bottom of an 8 by 12-inch non-metal baking dish with confectioners’ sugar. Pour the marshmallow mixture into the pan and smooth out the top. Dust with more confectioner’s sugar on the top. Allow to sit uncovered overnight until it dries out.
Turn the marshmallows onto a board and cut them into squares with a sharp knife dipped in hot water. Place each marshmallow square individually into a bag of confectioners’ sugar. Shake coating all sides before taking it out of the bag and putting the next marshmallow square in. Store in an airtight container.
I hope you enjoyed this story on how we prepared for our annual hot chocolate and Christmas movie party!
We all look forward to it every year!
