Hi, everyone! I am so stinkin excited to show you this Autumn project I made using a wooden cutout “thankful” sign, Mod Podge and fall colored plaid napkins. This is really a stunning piece especially when attached to my large pumpkin I made out of wooden ovals. Here is the post I did making smaller versions of this pumpkin.
You Will need to separate your 3-ply napkins into 3 sections. Discard the 2 white layers…or you can use them to clean the paint off the table because you might have made a teensy mess…oops!
Add a thick layer of Mod Podge to your wooden sign. Be careful not to get any on the edges. You will want the laser edge to show on your finished piece.
Place your napkin right side down and place your Mod Podge sign glue side down. Try to keep the plaid design as straight as possible.
Unfortunately, my words were longer than my napkin, so I needed to piece another section to be able to finish my sign. Matching up my plaid was doable but challenging to say the least.
After you get your napkins how you want them, cut the napkin away from your sign with scissors. Try and get as close to the edges as you can. It will look somewhat messy.
Once you have your napkins trimmed, let the Mod Podge dry approximately 30 minutes. Once dry, add another coat of Mod Podge to your sign. Be very careful not to tear the very delicate now only one-layer napkin. Let dry completely. Mod Podge will dry clear.
Once dry, carefully sand the edges to remove the extra napkin paper. Use a razor blade to trim away the hard-to-reach areas.
You will have some raw edges from the napkins. Put on a healthy coat of Mod Podge (carefully) to “unruffle” the loose edges.
This sign came with a jute twine hanger, which I removed and used for another project. You could totally hang this Thankful sign up as is, use it on your front door (if you use the waterproofing Mod Podge)or you could remove the twine hanger and glue it to a large wooden pumpkin as I did. 😊
