setting achievable goals

A Better Approach than New Year’s Resolutions

As the calendar turns, many of us are caught up in the excitement of New Year’s resolutions.

The thought of starting fresh, making promises to ourselves, and setting lofty goals can be invigorating.

However, the reality is that a significant percentage of people abandon their resolutions by the second Friday in January (Quitter’s Day).

This year, let’s consider an alternative approach: setting achievable goals.

why resolutions often fail

1. Vague Objectives: Resolutions like “get fit” or “be happier” lack specificity, making them hard to track.
2. Unrealistic Expectations: Many people aim for drastic changes that can feel overwhelming and unmanageable.
3. Lack of Planning: Resolutions often lack a concrete plan, which is essential for success.
4. Immediate Gratification: The desire for quick results can lead to disappointment when progress is slow.

the power of setting achievable goals

Achievable goals, rooted in the SMART criteria—Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound—provide a clear roadmap for success.

Here’s how to set them effectively:

timeneye

be specific

Instead of saying, “I want to lose weight,” specify how much you want to lose and in what timeframe.

For example, “I want to lose 10 pounds in three months by exercising 3 times a week and tracking my meals.” – very specific.

make it measurable

Define how you will measure success.

This could be tracking your workouts, keeping a food diary, or using an app to monitor progress.

Having tangible metrics helps maintain motivation.

ensure it is achievable

Set realistic goals based on your current lifestyle and commitments.

If you currently exercise once a month, aiming for five times a week may set you up for failure.

Instead, consider a goal of twice a week and gradually increase as you build your routine.

relevance is key

Your goals should align with your broader life values and aspirations.

Let’s say your primary aim is to improve your mental health.

You should consider goals that incorporate mindfulness practices or social activities rather than purely physical ones.

set a timeline

Establish a clear timeframe for your goals.

This creates a sense of urgency and helps in planning.

For instance, instead of an open-ended goal of “reading more books,” aim for “reading one book a month.”

breaking it down

This is what I used the first time I started running.

– Month 1: Walk for 20 minutes three times a week.
– Month 2: Start a beginner running program, gradually increasing running intervals.
– Month 3-5: Follow a structured training plan, incorporating speed work and longer runs.
– Month 6: Register for a 5K and complete the race.

staying accountable

Accountability can significantly increase your chances of success.

Consider sharing your goals with friends or family or even joining a group with similar objectives.

Regular check-ins can provide support and motivation.

celebrate small wins

Don’t wait until you achieve your final goal to celebrate.

Acknowledge and reward yourself for the small victories along the way.

This positive reinforcement will help keep you motivated and reinforce your commitment to your goals.

As we enter a new year, let’s shift the focus from vague resolutions to setting achievable goals.

By applying the SMART criteria and breaking down our objectives into manageable steps, we can create a sustainable path toward personal growth and fulfillment.

Remember, it’s not about perfection; it’s about progress.

Here’s to a year of achievable goals and meaningful accomplishments!

my signature Danielle

Hi, I’m Danielle!

I am the designer, writer and diy’er behind this blog. I enjoy decorating my home for practically nothing by doing most of the work myself, finding new and imaginative ways to make it beautiful and by watching for killer sales. I find humor almost anywhere and can laugh at myself through it all. I have learned that most projects don’t go exactly as intended, but can be more beautiful than the original plan.
