Winter Decorating

January 6th or Epiphany, is the official end of the Christmas season. So now what? How do we decorate our homes without all the lights and tinsel? Winter is the time most of us try to forget. I mean, let’s just think about spring right?! Winter months are gray enough, so why not embrace the cold and the long nights by decorating with a warm and cozy theme?

Every sofa and love seat in my home is draped with soft and beautiful throw blankets and I use white furry pillow coverings and faux sheepskins draped on the backs of chairs.

When changing my decor from the holidays to winter, I like to use many shades of white along with warm neutrals, nubby textures and metallics. I think the way metallics reflect the lighting in your home gives life and energy to a room. I use mirrors to help with this also. Nothing feels better after bracing the elements all day than coming home to a warm, inviting home. By inviting, I mean that warm slippers and hot cups of orange and cinnamon infused tea to enjoy while reading a great book kind of inviting.

White drapes, believe it or not, add warmth to a space. They brighten up the effects of a cloudy day in any room. Dark draperies add a heaviness and can make your space feel dark and gloomy.

Another way to add interest and depth to a room is with botanicals. Plants and vases with flowers invoke a sense of peace and comfort that only nature can provide. Even if the plants aren’t real, they add dimension to an otherwise, blah room.

A large area rug on a hardwood or tile floor is an amazing upgrade in the winter months. Even here in Florida, the nights can get chilly and a warm rug on the floor feels wonderful on your feet.

Lastly, candles and an aroma diffuser are a must! Since I started using battery operated candles on timers, my home is a shimmering paradise from 5:00pm til bedtime every night! I love it! Using a diffuser helps to keep a little moisture in the room which helps with static electricity. I have a couple going almost continually.

By adding texture and shades of white to your home, you can brighten up and actually enjoy the winter months…no really! 😉

Hi, I’m Danielle!

I am the designer, writer and diy’er behind this blog. I enjoy decorating my home for practically nothing by doing most of the work myself, finding new and imaginative ways to make it beautiful and by watching for killer sales. I find humor almost anywhere and can laugh at myself through it all. I have learned that most projects don’t go exactly as intended, but can be more beautiful than the original plan.
